First of all we will discuss about the types there are mainly 3 levels of stammering i will try to explain them to you:
level 1 this is least severe kind of stammering found in which the stammerer puts some kind of alphabet of his ease (mostly 'a') before any of his word in which he/she feels difficulty to speak( eg :- if they may have difficulty in word BAT they will prefix 'a' to the word BAT and will speak it like ABAT, they used 'a' as an supporting alphabet to the word in which they seem difficulty to speak.
level 2 In this kind of stammering the stammerer speaks in breaks that means in pauses of some fraction of seconds or more than that in order to speak, in this case the stammerer tries to push the word in order in order to speak the letter in which he has difficulty.
level 3 It is is the most critical stage the block stage when a stammerer gets completely blocked on some particular word and specially when he/her has to speak to a group of people or in a crowd or a kind of a seminar and is not able to speak out and is almost completely blocked, he does secondary actions like tapping his legs arms or jerking his head in order to speak ,this is the most severe stage of stammering.
The most of the stammerers are found in the second level. The Psychology works like that if you think that if i might not be able to speak that word and then you definitely stammer on that word. It is actually the lack of self confidence in the stammerer which makes him to do that
So these are 4 Golden Rules or the most basic of all the rules that you have to always keep in mind and follow it every time these are the main things the other ground rules previously explained will help you build your psychology and help to to speak to fluently :
1) Speed one step down :- A stammerer should never speak fast he must learn how to speak slowly that is the key to your improvement. First of all you have to ensure that your speaking speed rate is one step down and the you should check the speed rate by words per minute method, a stammerer should maintain a speed rate of 80-100 words per minute that is the general speed for a stammerer not more than that and not less than that. So you should check it on regular basis that how many words do you read in one minute . And try to maintain a flow in your speech as i mentioned earlier, a flow is important, and speak only 3-5 words per breathe, you must inhale nicely and then speak while exhaling, don't speak when you are out of breath.
2) Prolongation :- This is the most important thing if the stammerer really wants to improve. The stammerer while speaking must prolong to those alphabets in which he feels difficulty to speak. eg:- if one has problem in word 'K' and he has to speak word 'KART' then he must prolong the first or first two alphabets of the word and should speak like 'KKAAAART' or if you have problem in 'B' and want to speak 'BALOON' prolong it as ; BBAAAALOON'. This feels a bit awkward but you have to keep in mind that if i have to improve myself then i must follow it, later on when you will see improvement in yourself you can amend it. This is a very powerful technique specially for the words in which you feel difficulty. Do prolongation only on those words in which you feel difficulty, dont implement this in all the words.
3) Prefix :- Prefix means using a helping word before that particular word in which you stammer ( eg if i stammer in word GOOD then the proper way to speak is " hello GGGOOOD morning" with prolongation and speed one step down and try to speak with a FLOW that is the most important thing). Prefix helps a lot if someone asks you your name and you have difficulty in speaking your name then you would speak in this manner "HELLO I AM ABCXYZ" that was just an example that how to use a prefix. Prefix mostly helps maintain the flow of the speech which is a very important thing.
4) Breathing and reading practice :-
BREATHING EXERCISE :- This is a very important aspect of this therapy actually a stammerer has a bad breathing process once it is regularized it helps to a great extent . So how to breathe take full breath (one thing you should see that while breathing your chest should not expand, you have to inhale and exhale from your diaphram and most people do wrong here, it means that while inhaling your stomach must come out and go in rather than your chest) from your nose and exhale from your mouth but the exhaling time must be double than the inhaling time if you inhale from the nose in 3 seconds then you must exhale for at least 6 seconds from your mouth(tip : while doing this exercise keep one hand on your chest and another on stomach and keep observing and make sure that your chest remains steady while the process and you stomach comes in and and out while doing this process) . Do this exercise daily once in morning and once in evening and you will see improvement in yourself in just a couple of weeks or may be much less than that.
READING EXERCISE :- You have to make sure that you dedicate a good time for the reading exercise, choose a time slot and generally a nice silent place where you can hear you self properly you can also read in front of mirror if you can, while reading you have to make sure of some things just as you have to speak to bit loud (that is very important because it is seen that speaking mildly the stammerer has less stammering problem), another thing that while doing reading practice read slowly according to the speed rate mentioned above and try to read in a flow and speak only 3-5 words per breath not more than that.
ANYONE FOLLOWING THIS PROGRAM MUST KNOW THAT IT REQUIRES A GOOD LONG TERM DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT IN ORDER TO IMPROVE TO A GREAT EXTENT IN YOUR STAMMERING PROBLEM, THE STAMMER MUST FOLLOW ALL THE ABOVE RULES IN ACCORDANCE ALSO TO PREVIOUSLY GIVEN GROUND RULES ON DAILY BASIS IF HE WANTS TO SEE IMPROVEMENT IN HIM. THANKYOU
